Scope and Content
Each collection in the Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. Small Collections is unique, but they contain similar types of material. The most common kind of material are photographs of Civil Air Transport and Air America people, aircraft, and locations.
There are many first person accounts of experiences, correspondence, newspaper articles, oral histories, and interviews, and personal documents collected by employees or their relatives and acquaintances.
There are also a number of artifacts ranging from personal mementoes, to official CAT/Air America items and framed art pictures. The collection includes a few reel-to-reel films, VHS-tapes, and Betacam tapes, audio recordings, and several digital photograph collections stored on CD or DVD more specific information on the types of items available, please view the individual entries. The Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. Small Collections is housed in fifty-eight boxes of various sizes, flat-file folders, and objects totaling 60.07 linear ft.

Historical Sketch
The Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. Small Collections is composed of individual collections that are too small to support themselves on their own. Most of these collections are anywhere between one to several folders in size, or consist of a single object. This is an artificial collection, with the individual collection identified by the creator's name and associated collection number.
The collections presented here encompass the full history of Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. (CAT/Air America) and its subsidary companies from its early days in China to its participation in the evacuation during the Fall of Saigon, South Vietnam in 1975.
The collections were contributed by a number of sources including Civil Air Transport and Air America personnel, United States government employees, Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operatives and assets, and civilians involved with CAT/Air America or located in the Far East. Many of the collections were donated by the dependents (spouses, relatives, or children) of the subjects.
Where available, each individual collection contains information about the creator or donor, the subjects, as well as a brief biographical or historical sketch outlining the collection subject’s connection to CAT/Air America. Key to compiling these background sketches was the master list of CAT/Air America Employees found in the Jerry Fink Collection, CA167-87. The rest of the information was discovered through internet searches, obituaries, or the contents of the collection itself.

The Civil Air Transport (CAT) and Air America, Inc. Small Collections was established in July of 2013, and is composed of collections donated to the archive between 1986 and 2022, and is expected to continue to grow as new materials arrive. Each individual collection is accessioned as a unique collection with its own collection number and has its own record of acquistion. Please consult the individual collection for information on its donors and date of acquistion.

Note to the Researcher
Some of the collection numbers had to be changed, since earlier accession and donation paperwork was discovered at a later point.
Minimal preservation was applied where needed, such as removing rusted fasteners, housing photographs, negatives, and slides in polypropylene sleeves. Photographs were interleaved with acid-free paper.
The scrapbook in the Luther Wheate Collection, CA170-87, was photocopied onto acid-free paper for preserving original order and captions, after which the content was removed from the pages. The tips of the matches were cut off for safety reasons. The electronic files were saved onto the cloud server.
The scrapbooks in the Mike E. Campbell Collection, CA035-95, were photocopied onto acid-free paper for preserving original order and captions. The electronic files were saved onto the cloud server.
Where necessary, sensitive information was redacted, the original placed in a secure place for staff view only, and the redacted copy printed onto acid-free paper and placed in respective collection.
