Scope and Content

This collection contains business records, correspondence, personal papers, pay stubs, listings, directories, medical records, receipts, telegrams, clippings, application forms, information sheets, brochures, personnel rosters, aircraft accident investigations reports, sketches, notes, NTSB reports, and photographs that John D. Anthony created and/or collection in his function as Safety Manager for Air America. The John D. Anthony Papers are housed in one manuscript box, totaling 0.4 linear ft.

The collection arrived in good condition and was initially processed with only a container list as description. Due to a change of the content management system, further description proved to be necessary. The collection was reprocessed with a new arrangement and description for preservation and better accessibility purposes. The archivist identified two series, with the first series being the Air America, Inc. Series, which is further organized into four subseries: 1. Employment, 2. Accident Investigation, 3. Flight Crew, and 4. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

Subseries 1. contains an offer of employment as Manager Safety; clippings; correspondence regarding Anthony’s move to Taipei, Taiwan; correspondence regarding visas and passport; reimbursement for payments; aircraft used by Air America; aviation directories pertaining to Air America and their subsidiaries; medical records relevant for employment; telegrams; compensation sheets for Udorn, Vientiane, and Saigon; personal information supplement sheet; information sheets about Laos, Udorn, and Saigon; household cost datasheets; and Employees’ Benefits Summary for cockpit crew members.

Subseries 2. includes detailed aircraft investigation reports and a personnel roster for Vientiane, Laos.

Subseries 3. houses a flight crew designator list, which at the same time is a seniority list.

Subseries 4. features an National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) report, NTSB-AAS-72-3, Special Study, Emergency Landing Techniques in Small Fixed-wing Aircraft.

The second series is the Photograph Series, which is further organized into eight subseries: 1. Aircraft Accidents, 2. Air America Aircraft, 3. United States Air Force, 4. United States Navy, 5. Air Force One, 6. Saudi Arabia, 7. Air America Personnel, and 8. Air America in Thailand.

Subseries 1. contains a photocopy of a chronological listing from aircraft accidents and incidents with type of aircraft and tail number, and loose images organized by aircraft type. These images complement the accident reports in Series I., Subseries 2. Some images are graphic in nature depicting casualties. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.

Subseries 2. includes images from Pilatus Porter PC-6C, Fairchild C-123, Volpar Turbo 18 (Beech 18), Curtiss C-46 Commando, Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner, de Havilland Canada DHC-4 Caribou, Aero Commander 500, Helio H-395 Super Courier, Piper PA-18 Super Cub, Beech Twin Bonanza 50, Helio Courier, Hughes 500, Vickers (UK) VC2 Viscount 800 Series, Douglas C-47 Dakota, and unidentified aircraft.

Subseries 3. United States Air Force depicts a Lockheed C-141 Starlifter.

Subseries 4. United States Navy depict various types of aircraft.

Subseries 5. Air Force One depicts a Boeing VC-137B.

Subseries 6. Saudi Arabia depicts a Douglas DC-3.

Subseries 7. Air America Personnel depicts not further identified employees. Other topics are Air America facilities, landing strips, street scenes, buildings, and motor vehicles.

Subseries 8. Air America in Thailand depicts buildings, Air America apartment buildings, landscapes, Mekong River, Lima Site LS110, airport at Vientiane, Laos, runways, floods, Chinese temples, and Chinese cemetery.

Biographical Sketch

John Dennis (J. D.) Anthony was hired by Air America on November 5, 1970 for the position of safety manager. His base of operation was in Vientiane, Laos where he stayed until he resigned on July 16, 1973.

John D. Anthony was married to Joan Anthony.

John D. Anthony passed away in in the first half of 2019.
