James L. Kerr III Papers

 Collection
Identifier: F056-87

Scope and Content

This collection contains photocopies of documents, articles, clippings, reference materials, blueprints, listings, notes, maps, ephemera, photographs, 8mm films, microfilms, video tapes, and video disks created and/or collected by James L. Kerr, III during his lifetime. The James L. Kerr, III Papers are housed in seventy-two boxes of various sizes totaling 31.10 linear feet.

The collection was purchased from the widow of James L. Kerr, III, Bobbie Kerr, and arrived in three increments at the George H. Williams, Jr. World War I Aviation Library in good condition and well organized. The entire corpus of materials was kept in its folders and binders and originally processed with only few items in each manuscript box totaling about 142 boxes. Since this processing style bent and damaged the materials and because of difficulty in locating and accessing certain parts of the collection, as well as the lack of a proper finding aid, the entire collection was reprocessed and newly arranged.

The archivist identified four series with the first series being the Entente Series, which is further organized in three subseries: 1. Great Britain, 2. France, and 3. United States Army Air Service (USAAS).

Subseries 1. consists of RFC/RAF squadron histories, combat casualties, communiqués, unit locations in France, summaries of air intelligence reports, combat in the air reports, daily reports, war diaries, squadron record books, and daily reports of operations.

Subseries 2. contains compte rendu reports or daily reports from French units.

Subseries 3. contains pilot listings and American air intelligence bulletins and summaries.

The second series is the Central Powers Series, which is further arranged in two subseries: 1. German and 2. k.u.k. Austro-Hungarian.

Subseries 1. consists of the Nachrichtenblatt der Luftstreitkräfte of the various armies of the Kommandeur der Fliegertruppen (KOFL), the Marine Luftfahrt-Abteilung, Marine-Flieger-Abteilung, and German Extracts.

Subseries 2. includes the Nachrichtenblatt der k.u.k. Luftfahrtruppen, pilots, aircraft manufacturers and Austrian-Hungarian units listings.

The third series is the Publications Series, which is further structured in three subseries: 1. Entente, 2. Central, and 3. General Publications.

Subseries 1. contains articles and clippings regarding aircraft manufacturers and their various models, British unit histories such as Royal Flying Corps (RFC), Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS), Independent Force Royal Air Force (IAF), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) in the Dardanelles, Palestine, and Mesopotamia as well as the Squadrons 1 though 216; French unit histories such as Escadrilles 3 through 258; USA unit histories such as Aero squadrons 1 through 840. British, French and American pilot’s biographies and their achievements. A few articles cover the Belgian Air Force, Russian aviation during World War I, and the history of the Serbian Air Force.

A number of the articles were authored or co-authored by James L. Kerr and contain photographs. Of particular interest are the articles on Italian units, battles, and personnel, namely the Caporetto articles Part I through III or Silvio Scaroni by Kerr.

Subseries 2. includes articles and clippings pertaining to the German and k.u.k. Austro-Hungarian as well as the Ottoman Air Forces and their aircraft, airships, biographies, insignia, unit colors, aircraft markings, and units. Personnel covered are among others Herbert J. Larkin, Captain Barnum, George W. Schermerhorn, and Albatros D-Va STROPP. View folder arrangement for more names.

Subseries 3. covers general topics of World War I aviation history that do not necessarily fall into the above mentioned categories. The researcher will find catalogs and reference sources, and a chronology of World War I here.

The fourth and last series is the Audiovisual Media Series, and is by far the largest and the most important series, which is further organized into four subseries: 1. Moving Images, 2. Still Images, 3. Audio, and 4. Video Disk.

Subseries 1. includes various video tapes and 8mm film depicting titles like Battle of Britain, The Dawn Patrol, or Hell’s Angels among others. Of interest are items 12 and 13 covering the Over the Front seminar held by Kerr.

Subseries 2. contains microfilm covering the records of the American Expeditionary Forces, combats in the air reports and war diaries of RFC/RAF as well as photographs and transparencies of aircraft, units, and personnel of all the main countries engaged in World War I.

Subseries 3. contains two audio tapes with titles Zeppelins-, and various symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven.

Subseries 4. are video disks from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum containing indices of aircraft manufacturers and other aircraft types, biographical information, as well as information about aviation collections overseas.

Biographical Sketch

James Lee Kerr III was born on May 27, 1946 in Corpus Christi, Texas to a family with a long tradition of service in the United States Navy and roots in Texas dating back to 1822. Kerr’s father, whose deployments with the Navy, allowed young James views of many countries throughout the world including the Philippine Islands and Norway. He attended Rice University in Houston, Texas as well as the American University in Washington, D.C., where he majored in archaeology and ancient history, and from which he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree. From 1971 through 1974, Kerr attended the Medical College of Virginia.

While in the United States Navy, Kerr was promoted from the enlisted ranks to a rating as a Commissioned Officer, and later appointed as a Medical Administrative Officer, specializing in Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Warfare Defense. James L. Kerr III also served his country during the Vietnam War and his final shipboard assignment was aboard a nuclear powered aircraft carrier. Due to severe health issues, Kerr accepted a disability retirement from active duty in October of 1984.

By the end of that year, James L. Kerr III and his family moved to Dallas, Texas where he accepted a position as an Administrator of the Radiology Department at Parkland Memorial Hospital. Kerr possessed a brilliant and gifted mind that pursued a wide range of interests, such as photography, ancient history, aviation, archeology, anthropology, astronomy, and music. He played piano in a variety of styles ranging from classical music to jazz as well as performing as a guest pianist in a televised show of the world famous musician and composer André Previn during the latter’s tenure with the Houston Symphony Orchestra.

Kerr’s great interest in World War I aviation led him to join both the American and British chapter of the Cross and Cockade Journal. He was one of the founding members of the League of World War I Aviation Historians that regularly met at The University of Texas at Dallas, with which he held many positions such as treasurer and editor. Kerr played a crucial role in successfully launching Over the Front magazine. He also wrote for the magazine specializing in k.u.k. Austro-Hungarian and Italian aviation, as well as an award winning thee part article titled "Caporetto" or "Silvio Scaroni".

Kerr’s health conditions deteriorated significantly in his later years and he died on July 30, 1989 at the young age of forty-three leaving behind his wife Bobbie and eleven children ages three through seventeen, out of which six were adopted during their marriage. George H. Williams, Jr. characterized him in his eulogy as a “resolute, able and brilliant man, but his true, pure legacy is his family. He loved them all. Gentle people, he was my friend.”

Note to the Researcher

Articles and clippings were in plastic sheets, sometimes glued onto construction paper to support the paper. All these sheets have been removed and the construction paper has been detached from the articles where possible. Then the pages were interleafed with acid-free paper. Where necessary, the staples have been removed and exchanged with coated paperclips. The photos that were originally housed in metal file cabinets were either stored in boxes or processed in polypropylene sleeves in photo albums.

Material Removed List

1.25 linear ft. (one record center box) of materials have been de-accessioned as well as 0.4 linear ft. (one manuscript box) of floppy disks, since the information appeared to have been duplicated with printouts and the necessary hard and software to ensure proper access is not available anymore.
