Biographical Sketch

William Armitage "Bill" Ong was born in Lacon, Illinois on December 28, 1902 to Judson W. Ong, Jr. and Mercedes E. Armitage Ong.

William A. Ong first soloed in an aircraft in 1927, after which he worked as a barnstormer and participated in airshows for two years.

From 1929 through 1936, he worked for various companies as a aircraft salesman.

During the 1930s, Ong participated in Thompson Trophy Races.

Ong founded his own company, the Ong Aircraft Company, in 1937. He served in World War II rising to the rank of a Captain in the Army Air Corps Reserve. He trained pilots throught the Civilian Pilot Training Program.

In 1940, Ong was a founding member of the National Aviation Trades Association (NATA).

William Ong was an active member of numerous aviation organizations and worked as editor for many aviation journals.

William A. Ong passed away on November 9, 1979 at the age of seventy-seven.

The archivist kept the original organization intact without any further arrangement.

The William A. Ong Collection was donated to the History of Aviation Archives, Special Collections and Archives Division, Eugene McDermott Library, The University of Texas at Dallas by Grace Harris on 1983-10-26.
