Scope and Content

This collection contains correspondence, photographs, slides, and operational manuals related to both fixed and rotary wing aircraft, ephemera, memorabilia, clippings, articles, and charts that were created and/or collected by Brian K. Johnson during his career with Air America. The Brian K. Johnson Papers are housed in eighteen boxes of various sizes and one item totaling 10.8 linear ft.

The collection arrived in good condition and was initially processed with only a container list as description. Since the original processing, more materials were donated and incorporated into this collection. Due to a change of the content management system, further description proved to be necessary.

Biographical Sketch

Brian Keigh Johnson was born November 20, 1935, in Fairfield, Maine. He served in the United States Army and the Texas National Guard. In 1963, he was certified to operate rotary wing aircraft by the United States Army Primary Helicopter School at Fort Wolters, Texas.

Johnson joined Air America on March 3, 1966, as Assistant Chief Pilot for Rotor wing aircraft and was an active pilot in the helicopter division. After he resigned from Air America on October 1, 1974, he remained involved in the private aviation sector. He divided his time between living in Texas and Mexico. He was active in promoting the history and legacy of Air America through his involvement with the Air America Association, as well as serving as a member of The History of Aviation Collection’s Advisory Council Board.

Captain Brian Keigh Johnson passed away on September 26, 2022, after a long illness. He is being laid to rest at Parkdale Cemetery in Arlington, Texas.

Abstract

Brian Keigh Johnson was an Assistant Chief Pilot, rotor wing, for Air America in Saigon from March 3, 1966 through October 1, 1974, when he resigned from the company.

Series Description

The archivist kept the original organization intact without any further arrangement.

The Brian K. Johnson Papers were donated to the History of Aviation Archives, Special Collections and Archives Division, Eugene McDermott Library, The University of Texas at Dallas, by Brian K. Johnson in multiple accessions from from 1994 through 2018.
