Biographical Sketch

James Thomas Hutchins, Jr. was born in Belton, Texas on August 17, 1903, to James Thomas Hutchins, Sr. and Vinnie L. Massey Hutchins. In 1939, James Thomas or J. T. “Pinky” Hutchins, Jr. married Margarette Berry Hutchins although it is unknown if they had any children.

Hutchins was an aircraft enthusiast. He spent much of his life surrounded by aircrafts, something he truly enjoyed. He worked under contract for the U.S. military as a civilian flight instructor lending his expertise to various flying schools, and later as a distributor for Beechcraft Aviation Company.

He received his certificate in flying proficiency in September 1941 from the Coleman Flying School, a civilian flight school located in Coleman, Texas. The school was contracted by the U.S. Army to assist in World War II training efforts. While at the Coleman Flying School, Hutchins recruited pilots from sixteen states to train these potentials to be flight instructors. On September 21, 1942, a gas explosion occurred at the Coleman Flying school, killing two civilians and injuring several others. Hutchins was involved in the accident, and although he was seriously injured in the explosion, he continued to work the next day. By 1943, Hutchins gained the position of Director of Flight for the Coleman Flying School. Additionally, he was a member of the Ancient and Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen and the OX5 Aviation Club. James Thomas Hutchins, Jr. passed away on July 20, 1980, in Dallas, Texas, at the age of seventy-six.

Note to the Researcher

The materials in this collection are minimally arranged and the original order was preserved where possible. The materials are in good condition. The Jeppesen low altitude enroute maps, Series VII., Box 5, Folder 9, could have originally been located in the Jeppesen Airway Manual, Vol. 4, Series V., Subseries 2., Box 4, Folder 4, as there are maps missing with corresponding numbers. Some of the documents and clippings showed discoloration, creasing of paper, and fragility due to acidic paper. Additionally, a few documents showed potential evidence of mold: Series IV., Box 2, Folder 6, Series V., Subseries 1., Box 2, Folder 8, and Subseries 2., Box 3, Folder 6. NOTE: Existing/possible damages include tearing, creasing, staining, and signs of normal use. Documents, clippings and articles were photocopied onto acid-free paper; documents, articles, clippings, and photographs were interleaved in folders with acid-free paper, and depending on their size, some materials are housed in archival polypropylene sleeves. Staples, paperclips, and metal fasteners were removed where necessary.

Materials Removed List

0.35 Linear ft. (one manuscript box) of original documents and clippings were deaccessioned due to the fragile condition of some materials, presence of potential mold, and/or duplication of materials: Series I, Series III, subseries 3., Series IV, subseries 3., Series V. subseries 1 and subseries 2., Series VII; and three black and white photographs due to the presence of potential mold: Series IV.
