Joseph A. Weisberg Papers
Scope and Content
This collection contains archival records, correspondence, documents, manuscripts, and photographs that were created and/or collected during Joseph A. Weisberg’s life and career as a photojournalist and freelance writer. The Joseph A. Weisberg Papers are housed in sixteen manuscript boxes, eleven oversize boxes, and four photograph boxes of various sizes, totaling 29.8 linear feet.
The boxed materials were received unsorted and unorganized in fair-to-good condition. Initial inspection of the collection revealed the major topic of the materials to be the history of aviation in Texas, particularly in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. There are three major components of the collection: the writings and partial manuscripts of Joseph A. Weisberg, documents and papers that supported Weisberg’s research, and Weisberg’s photograph collection.
The Joseph A. Weisberg Papers reflect his attempts to prepare written materials and secure funding for several publications, and to collect photographic material to support his publications and for exhibit. The collection does not provide evidence that any of the proposed written materials were published. It does, however, contain material documenting Weisberg’s successful photographic exhibit, “Early Love,” in October 1979 as well as the mounted photographs used in the exhibit.
The archivist identified five series with the first series being the Archival Records Series, which is further organized in eight subseries: 1. Illustrations, 2. Manufacturers, 3. Newsletters, 4. Newspapers, 5. Organizations, 6. Periodicals, 7. Personal Papers, and 8. Publications.

Biographical Sketch
Joseph A. Weisberg was born November 14, 1913, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He lived there through his high school years, graduating from West Philadelphia High School and attending Drexel Institute. Weisberg then moved to Texas where he attended Texas Christian University (Special Courses Division.) Prior to WWII, he was employed by the Fawcett Publishing Company where he created stories about agencies and people involved in the magazine distribution industry. It was during this period that his interest in writing began to focus on topics associated with his personal interest in flying.
In 1941, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and was assigned to a public relations position at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Texas. His responsibility in this position was to prepare stories and related photographs of military and base activities. Initially associated with the Gulf Coast Training Command, Weisberg’s group was reassigned to Tarrant Air Base (later renamed Carswell Air Force Base,) Fort Worth, Texas, in 1942.
Weisberg’s group was again transferred in 1943 to the newly established B-24 Bomber Training Base at Liberal, Kansas. There he was given the opportunity to qualify for flight training and was assigned as a crew member on a B-24.
He received an honorable discharge in 1945 and returned to the Fort Worth area where he became an associate with the newly created Johnson Advertising Agency. His responsibilities there included photography, publicity, public relations, and advertising. His work was published in Open Road Magazine, Grit, Texas Aviation, Flite Line Times, Fort Worth Observer newspaper, Metroplex Photographer, and Antique Airplane Digest. None of these published materials are in the collection; rather, they are referenced in one of Weisberg’s autobiographical summaries.
A few years later, Weisberg established his own marketing company. The company prospered; and in 1973, he sold his shares in the company to return to free-lance writing and photojournalism.
Joseph A. Weisberg died in March 1983. He was survived by his wife, Gertrude; a son, Michael, a college educator in Claremont, California; and a daughter, Ethel, a social agency health administrator in Phoenix, Arizona.

Abstract
From his early life on, Joseph A. Weisberg was interested in journalism and especially in photo journalism with the focus on aviation topics, which also sparked his interest in flying. During World War II, Weisberg trained on and served as a crew member on Consolidated B-24 Liberators. After the war, he settled in Fort Worth, Texas to assume a position at an advertising agency. Shortly thereafter, he established his own marketing company before deciding in 1973 to go back to his initial interest in journalism. The papers reflect his attempts to prepare written materials and secure funding for several publications, and to collect photographic material to support his publications and for exhibit.

It is the researcher's responsibility to secure permission from copyright holders of materials to which this institution does not own copyright.

B = Black and White
1 = Image Number
Images archived in plastic image holders may also have a location code in the format: 1/TL. In this example, the number is the sheet number and the letters indicate the top left position on the sheet. Position indicators are T = top, L = left, R = right, M = middle, and B = bottom. Position indicators may be combined to describe the position on the sheet, as shown in this example.
Note to the Researcher
Several factors influence the “grading” of the photographs in the collection, especially in Series V. The quality of photographic equipment and development processes at the time the photographs were taken must be considered. A significant portion of the photographs are of other photographs, or of document pages containing images.
In addition, many of the pictures have been significantly clipped or edited in a manner that adversely affects viewing the primary subject(s) of the photographs themselves. Finally, a large portion of the photographs have been affixed to other backing media for display or Weisberg’s own purposes; and he has recorded additional handwritten notes to the backing media in many instances. As a result, those photographs recorded to be of poor or fair quality are those which have been retouched, marked or written upon, stained, indistinct (too dark or out of focus,) or possess some other impediment(s) to viewing the main subject(s).
