Scope and Contents

This collection contains correspondence generated by the executives and staff of The University of Texas at Dallas Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs is housed on in one Banker’s Box totaling 1 linear ft. The collection arrived in good condition and the processing archivist identified four series:

The first series is the Correspondence of Dr. Clark, Vice President for Academic Affairs/Acting President The University of Texas at Dallas which contains correspondence regarding faculty interviews and appointments, tenure reviews, questions about faculty compensation, complaints about instruction, and other academic matters generated by Dr. Alexander Clarke in his role as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Acting President of UTD.

The second series is the Correspondence of Dr. Robert Rutford, President of UTD which consists of correspondence from Dr. Robert Rutford (President of UTD) confirming, supporting, or clarifying correspondence sent by Dr. Clarke as well as addressing academic matters that need to be handled directly by the University President.

The third series is the Correspondence of Dr. John Wiorkowski (Assistant Vice President, Academic Affairs) which consists of correspondence sent by Dr. Wiorkowski pursuant to his duties as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs.

The fourth series is the Correspondence of Administrative Assisstants (Office of Vice President for Academic Affairs) whic includes correspondence from Charlotte Bowling and Margaret Kilbourn, Administrative Assistants in the Office of the Vice President for Academic affairs, as well as one folder of miscellaneous correspondence that could not be assigned to any particular office.

Historical Sketch

The Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs oversees many of The University of Texas at Dallas functions related to managing academic faculty, including salary questions, faculty recruitment and appointment, tenure reviews, complaints about instructors, and other tasks related to the academic mission of the University.

Dr. Alexander Clark (1929-2009), assumed the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas at Dallas in 1974. From 1981 until 1982, he also served as the Acting President of The University, ceding those duties to Dr. Robert Rutford upon his appointment in the spring of 1982. Dr. Clark continued to serve as Vice President for Academic Affairs until 1991. At that time he was appointed Executive Director of The Cecil and Ida Green Center for the Study of Science and Society. He retired from UTD in 1997, and passed away in 2009.

Dr. John Wiorkowski is currently Professor Emeritus of Management with The University of Texas at Dallas Naveen Jindal School of Management. He served as the Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs from 1987-1991. He also served as an Associated Provost from 1991-2001.
