Scope and Content

This collection contains newspaper clippings covering various people, events, and milestones in the career of Francis S. Johnson. It also contains three oversize objects that hung in his office on the campus of The University of Texas at Dallas. The Francis S. Johnson Collection is housed in one manuscript box and one oversized object box. It is organized into five series:

Series I. Newspaper Clippings about Francis S. Johnson and Family contains newspaper clippings about Francis S. Johnson's career milestones, and accolades.

Series II. Newspaper Clippings about Other People consists of newspaper clippings about co-workers, colleagues, family, and acquaintances of Francis S. Johnson.

Series III. Newspaper Clippings About SCAS and UTD includes newspaper clippings about the Southwest Center for Advance Studies and The University of Texas at Dallas.

Series IV. Newspaper Clippings Events houses newspaper clippings about events of interest to Francis S. Johnson.

Series V. Oversize Items contains three framed objects that hung in Francis S. Johnson office at The University of Texas at Dallas.

Biographical Sketch

Francis S. Johnson (1918-2009) was born in Omak, Washington on July 20, 1918. He received a degree in physics from the University of Alberta in 1940, and degrees in meteorology from U.C. Berkley, and UCLA. He served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He was appointed the first head of the Atmospheric and Space Sciences Program of The Graduate Research Center of the Southwest's Earth and Planetary Science Laboratory. He served as President of UTD from 1969-1971.

Abstract

Francis S. Johnson (1918-2009) was a pioneering space scientist who was appointed the first head of the Atmospheric and Space Sciences Program of The Graduate Research Center of the Southwest's Earth and Planetary Science Laboratory. He served as President of The University of Texas at Dallas from 1969-1971.
