Scope and Content

This collection contains documents, reports, photographs, video recordings, audio tapes, digital files and other materials produced by the activities of The University of Texas at Dallas Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost. The materials are housed in thirty-seven boxes (thirty-five manuscript boxes, two document storage boxes) and thirty-four digital files uploaded to the Eugene McDermott Library’s Treasures@UTDallas.

The material was transferred in good condition and is organized into five series. The first series is the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies (SCAS) and Graduate Research Center of The Southwest (GRCSW) which is further organized into three subseries: 1. SCAS/GRCSW Foundation Documents; 2. SCAS GRCSW Annual Reports; and 3. SCAS/GRCSW Articles and Papers.

Subseries 1. consists of copies of documents, transfers, legal reports, memoranda, grants, land transfers, schedules, descriptions, reports, charts, and material related to the operations of the SCAS/GRCSW.

Subseries 2. contains annual reports produced by the GRCSW and SCAS documenting their yearly scientific, academic, and social activities.

Subseries 3. Includes articles and press releases by and about scholars associated with the GRCSW and SCAS.

The second series is The University of Texas at Dallas and is organized into eight subseries: 1. UTD Historical Material; 2. UTD Foundation Documents; 3. UTD Legal Contracts and Grants; 4. Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost Operations Files; 5. UTD Faculty Policies and Procedures; 6. Eugene McDermott Scholars Programs; 7. UTD Student Programs; 8. UTD Press Coverage.

Subseries 1. houses chronologies, biographical sketches of important figures, timelines, and copies of important founding documents.

Subseries 2. consists of copies of documents, transfers, legal reports, memoranda, and grants transfers, related to establishment of the University of Texas at Dallas and the dissolution of the SCAS in 1969 as well as a Precis of the Academic Plan of the University from 1975.

Subseries 3. contains descriptions of the agreements transferring research contracts and grants from SCAS to UTD.

Subseries 4. includes reports, memoranda, events, Christmas cards, and staff information related to the operation of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Subseries 5. houses policies and procedures related to faculty at UTD including emeritus titles, hiring and firing, faculty workload, and information on faculty positions and needs in the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. Access to some files in this collection is restricted due to privacy laws.

Subseries 6. houses of information programs, annual reports, brochures, and invitations to events honoring the McDermott Scholars. This subseries also contains information about the McDermott Scholars application process, which is restricted according to FERPA legislation.

Subseries 7. consists of brochures and information about the Academic Excellence Awards, UTD Student Ambassadors, and UTD Chess Camps.

Subseries 8. contains articles, press releases, and newsletters by and about the University of Texas at Dallas.

The third series is Photographic Material. It is organized into ten sub-series: 1. UTD History and Publicity; 2. UTD Campus Facilities; 3. UTD Employees and Dignitaries; 4. UTD Schools and Centers; 5. UTD Events; 6. UTD Students and Student Life; 7. Margaret McDermott/Eugene McDermott Scholars Program; 8. SCAS/UTD Science Experiments and Projects; 9. UTD Classrooms and Labs; and 10. UTD Anniversary Displays.

The first subseries is UTD History and Publicity. It is organized into five sub-series: A. UT System/GRCSW/SCAS; 2. UTD Development Board/Advisory Council; C. UTD Historic Events; D. UTD Development Fundraising; E. UTD Press Releases and Publicity.

Sub-subseries A. includes historic photographs of the SCAS, early building dedications on campus, the UT System Regents, and a model created to showcase the future expansion of UTD.

Sub-subseries B. houses photographs of members of UTD’s Development Board and Advisory Council.

Sub-subseries C. consists of picture of the transfer of land from the Texas Research Foundation (TRF) to UTD, The Founders North Great Toad Race, awarding of first diplomas, and a visit by Lady Bird Johnson.

Sub-subseries D. contains photographs of major development gifts to the University, fundraising campaigns, and strategic planning events.

Sub-subseries E. includes photographic press releases about UTD as well as photographs used in various university publications.

The second subseries is UTD Campus and Facilities. It is arranged into three sub-subseries: A. UTD Campus Landscape and Nature; B. UTD Buildings and Facilities; C. General UTD Campus Construction.

Sub-subseries A. houses photographs of the UTD campus, general landscape features, and local flora and fauna.

Sub-subseries B. consists of photographs of the various buildings located on the UTD campus.

Sub-subseries C. contains photographs of construction projects located on the UTD campus.

The third subseries is UTD Employees and Dignitaries. It is arranged into five sub-subseries: A. UTD Founders; B. UTD Presidents; C. UTD Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost Personnel; D. UTD Employees (Staff and Faculty); and E. Notable Visitors to UTD.

Sub-subseries A. includes photographs of the UTD founders as a group, Cecil and Ida Green and Margaret McDermott individually.

Sub-subseries B. houses photographs of UTD presidents Robert Rutford, Franklyn Jenifer, and David Daniel.

Sub-subseries C. consist of photographs of the staff of the Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost as well as Dr. Hobson Wildenthal.

Sub-subseries D. contains photographs of various staff and faculty members of UTD.

Sub-subseries E. includes photographs of prominent government figures and celebrities visits to UTD. It also includes photographs of the 2001 meeting between President George W. Bush of the United States and Vicente Fox of Mexico.

The fourth subseries is the UTD Schools and Centers. It is organized into two sub-subseries: A. Callier Center for Communication Disorders; and B. Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science.

Sub-subseries A. houses photographs of the UTD Callier Center for Communication Disorders at both the Richardson and Dallas locations.

Sub-subseries B. consists of photographs of activities and locations related to the Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Sciences.

The fifth subseries is the UTD Events. It is organized into eleven sub-subseries: A. Andrew R. Cecil Lectures; B. Alexander Clark Events; C. Anson L. Clark Memorial Lectures; D. UTD Lectures; E. UTD Receptions; F. General UTD Campus Events; G. UTD School of Arts and Humanities Events; H. UTD Womens’ Club; I. UTD Athletics and Competitions; J. UTD Registrations and Orientations; and K. UTD Commencements and Graduations.

Sub-subseries A. contains photographs of the Andrew R. Cecil Lectures.

Sub-subseries B. includes photographs of Alexander Clark, and the reception honoring his tenure at UTD.

Sub-subseries C. houses photographs of the Anson L. Clark Memorial Lectures.

Sub-subseries D. consists of photographs of various lectures given on the UTD campus.

Sub-subseries E. contains photographs of various receptions and parties occurring on the UTD campus.

Sub-subseries F. includes photographs of a number of student holiday, cultural, and hobby events at UTD.

Sub-subseries G. houses photographs of art shows, performances, and theatrical productions at UTD.

Sub-subseries H. consists of photographs of events sponsored by the UTD Women's Club.

Sub-subseries I. contains pictures of the UTD Chess Team, College Bowl Team, and Soccer, Baseball, and Tennis teams.

Sub-subseries J. includes photographs of student and parent registration and orientations events, including the first undergraduate registration and first freshman orientation.

Sub-subseries K. houses photographs of UTD commencement and graduation ceremonies.

Subseries 6. consists of photographs of student events, activities, and general daily life at UTD.

Subseries 7. contains photographs of Margaret McDermott receiving the UT System Santa Rita Award in 2004, as well as trips and events with the McDermott Scholars.

Subseries 8. includes photographs of a number of earth and space science experiments performed by scholars at the GRCSW/SCAS and UTD.

Subseries 9. houses photographs of classroom and laboratory spaces in various buildings on the UTD campus.

Subseries 10. consists of photographs of a display set up for UTD’s 20th Anniversary, as well as photographs mounted to cardboard, which were used for a display in honor of UTD’s 25th Anniversary.

The fourth series is the Multimedia and Digital Materials. It is organized into five sub-series: 1. CD-ROMs; 2. VHS Tapes; 3. Audio Tapes; 4. 3.5” Computer Disks; 5. Digital Files.

Subseries 1. contains photographs of a number of events that have occurred at UTD stored on CD-ROMs for computer access.

Subseries 2. includes VHS promotional tapes, and tapes of lectures including several entries in the Polykarp Kusch Distinguished Lecture Series.

Subseries 3. houses audio tape recordings of several Polykarp Kusch Distinguished Lectures.

Subseries 4. consists of 3.5” computer disks. They are unlabeled and at the time of the creation of this finding aid the University Archives lacks the capability to access these.

Subseries 5. Contains digital documents housed on the Eugene McDermott Library’s Treasures@UTDallas. These are copies of documents located in Series II, Subseries 1-3.

Historical Sketch

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost promotes and pursues excellence in the University of Texas at Dallas' (UTD) academic units, oversees all Academic Affairs at UTD, and sponsors faculty hiring, faculty promotion and tenure, and all academic programs. The Provost provides oversight to the seven academic deans, the graduate dean (Graduate Studies), the undergraduate dean (Undergraduate Education), and other programs across the campus, including the McDermott Scholars Program, the Office of International Education (OIE), the Office of Student Success and Assessment (OSSA),and the Polykarp Kusch Lecture Series.

Academic Affairs units work collaboratively to provide an interdisciplinary academic program focused on high quality instruction and learning in a research-oriented setting with a small, liberal arts college sensibility. The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost maintains an active role in the application and dissemination of policy, the development of new degree programs, and the enhancement of academic research.

Abstract

The Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost promotes and pursues excellence in the University of Texas at Dallas' (UTD) academic units, oversees all Academic Affairs at UTD, and sponsors faculty hiring, faculty promotion and tenure, and all academic programs.
