Scope and Content

This collection contains documents, photographs, press releases, reports, recordings, artifacts and information created by the Eugene McDermott Library of The University of Texas at Dallas in the course of its existence as a working academic library. The Eugene McDermott Library Collection is housed in 44 boxes totaling 23.5 linear feet.

The collection is composed of the holdings of both the Eugene McDermott Library and its Special Collections and Archives Division. It was received in good condition, and an order was imposed by the processing archivist. Five series were identified with the first being Eugene McDermott Library, which is further divided into six subseries: 1. Eugene McDermott Library Administration and Procedures, 2. Eugene McDermott Library Staff, 3. Eugene McDermott Library Displays and Events, 4. The Faculty Author Reception, 5. The Ethel Ward-McLemore Award, and 6. Eugene McDermott Library Photographs.

Subseries 1 contains reports, guides, brochures, procedure manuals, handbooks, tour pamphlets, newsletters and other information related to the organization and administration of the Eugene McDermott Library’s operations.

Subseries 2 includes staff service awards, biographical information about library leadership, holiday parties, events, and the staff newsletter.

Subseries 3 consists of programs, advertisements, descriptions, flyers, hand-outs and other material related to lectures, meetings, displays, and events held by the library.

Subseries 4 houses flyers, programs, and information about the Faculty Author Reception, a library event that honors publications by University faculty.

Subseries 5 contains photographs, planning documents, and programs, as well as a biographical sketch of Ethel Ward-McLemore, supporting the Ethel Ward-McLemore Award, which is awarded to library staff for distinguished service and achievement.

Subseries 6 includes photographs, negatives, and contact sheets of library staff, events, facilities, buildings, and other subjects.

The second series is the Special Collections and Archives Division which is divided into sixteen subseries: 1. Special Collections General Information, 2. History of Aviation Collection (HAC), 3. HAC Brochures, 4. The Airlog, 5. George W. Jalonick III and Dorothy Cockrell Jalonick Distinguished Lecture Series, 6. Louise B. Belsterling Botanical Library/C.L. Lundell Collection, 7. Civil Air Transport (CAT)/Air America, 8. James H. Doolittle Library, 9. Arnold A. Jaffe Holocaust Collection, 10. The Vice Admiral Charles E. Rosendahl Lighter-than-Air Collection, 11. Subseries 1 contains proposals, reports, and documents related to the basic layout and function of Special Collections and Archives Division.

Subseries 2 includes information about the History of Aviation Collection (HAC). It is divided into sixteen sub-subseries: A. HAC at the University of Texas (Austin, TX), B. HAC General Operations, C. HAC Budget and Financial Reports, D. HAC Advisory Council, E. HAC General Files and Correspondence, F. HAC Appraisals, Donations, and Fundraising, G. HAC Publicity, H. HAC Cataloging Projects and Duplicate Books, I. HAC Display Cases, J. HAC Visitors, K. HAC Staff, L. HAC Volunteers, M. HAC Programs and Lectures, N. HAC Descriptions/Other Aviation Museums, O. HAC Film Inventories, and P. Helicopter Material.

Sub-subseries A contains histories, correspondence, a dedication guestbook, and news articles about the HAC at the University of Texas at Austin.

Sub-subseries B includes mission statements, forms, workflows, polices, and procedures documenting the establishment of the HAC.

Sub-subseries C consists of budget projections, Curator Reports, year-end summaries, expense statements, and other material relating to the financial viability of the HAC.

Sub-subseries D houses notes, forms, documents, reports, and information about the bi-annual meeting of the HAC’s Advisory Council.

Sub-subseries E contains general documents, reports, memos, and correspondence about the day to day operations of the HAC.

Sub-subseries F includes proposals, catalogs, and description of potential collections for acquisition, as well as summaries of financial conditions, appraisal and valuations, and information about the HAC’s endowment.

Sub-subseries G consists of news articles mentioning or discussing the HAC, as well as its own press releases.

Sub-subseries H houses reports, proposals, procedures, and material related to cataloging books and journals held by the HAC, as well as the disposition of duplicate books.

Sub-subseries I contains plans, pricing, and descriptive information about the HAC’s custom display cases.

Sub-subseries J consists of correspondence and data about visitors to the HAC, including World War II German Aviator Adolph Galland.

Sub-subseries K includes biographical information, memos, procedures, and training of staff who work at the HAC.

Sub-subseries L houses notes about the projects and work of volunteers at the HAC.

Sub-subseries M contains programs, planning information, and publicity for events, lectures, and symposia held by the HAC.

Sub-subseries N consists of third-party descriptions of the HAC in including The Guide to Texas Museums and National Air and Space Museum (NASM) sources for Air and Space History

Sub-subseries O includes inventories taken of the film in the custody of the HAC.

Sub-subseries P includes documents and proposals to establish a helicopter history section at the HAC.

Subseries 3 contains copies and layouts of the various promotional brochures created to advertise the HAC.

Subseries 4 includes layouts, planning, and guides for the creation of The Airlog, the HAC’s newsletter.

Subseries 5 houses programs, biographical information, and promotional material for the George W. Jalonick III and Dorothy Cockrell Jalonick Distinguished Lecture Series, an endowed lecture held annually by the HAC.

Subseries 6 consists of biographical information, grant forms, press releases, and bookplates for the Louise B. Belsterling Botanical Library?C.L. Lundel Collection.

Subseries 7 contains documents, reports, information from the memorial dedication, research requests, and other activity related to CAT/Air America material at the HAC.

Subseries 8 includes documents, proposals, programs, newsletters, and information about the James H. Doolittle Library.

Subseries 9 consists of exhibition information and bookplates for the Arnold A. Jaffe Holocaust Collection.

Subseries 10 houses proposals, requests, shipping information, a biographical sketch and information about securing Vice Admiral Charles E. Rosendahl’s material for the HAC as well as information about other Lighter-than-Air archvial collections.

Subseries 11 contains proposals, example programs, policies and procedures, information on the collection of Cecil Green, and planning documents related to the establishment of the University Archives.

Subseries 12 includes participant lists, conference materials, articles, and information about World War I aviators, as well as the life of George H. Williams, Jr.

Subseries 13 houses displays, stamps, programs, and other material related to the WPRL.

Subseries 14 consists of operation reports, financial records, meeting minutes, by-laws, and dissolution agreements related to the function of the Aerospace Heritage Foundation.

Subseries 15 houses designs, plans, brochures, fundraising gala information, and collaboration between the Frontiers of Flight Museum and the HAC.

Subseries 16 contains photographs, negatives, and contact sheets showcasing the activities of the Special Collections and Archives Division. It is divided in to eleven sub-subseries: A. History of Aviation Collection Dedication, B. Special Collections and Archives History, C. History of Aviation Collection (HAC), D. CAT/Air America, E. James H. Doolittle Library, F. General Aviation, G. The Vice Admiral Charles E. Rosendahl Lighter-than-Air Collection, H. Twirlybirds, I. George H. Williams World War I Aviation Library, J. H. Harold Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library (WPRL), and K. Special Collections Miscellaneous Graphic Materials.

Sub-subseries A includes photographs of the dedication ceremonies of the History of Aviation Collection at The University of Texas at Dallas in 1978.

Sub-subseries B consists of photographs of Special Collections and Archives Division facilities as well as day to day activities.

Sub-subseries C houses photographs of HAC staff, volunteers, visitors, notable guests, lectures and presentations.

Sub-subseries D contains photographs of Upholding the Airman’s Bond, a 2009 symposium on Air America held at UTD as well as photographs of the 2005 Dallas Air America Reunion.

Sub-subseries E includes photographs of the dedication of the James H. Doolittle Library, displays and statues related to James H. Doolittle, and the 2008 North Texas Doolittle Raiders Reunion.

Sub-subseries F consists of photographs of historic aircraft, World War II medals and decorations, and early aviators.

Sub-subseries G contains photographs of the packing up of the Rosendahl material for transport, Rosendahl artifacts and displays, and researchers using the Rosendahl materials.

Sub-subseries H includes rare photographs of the Hiller X-18 Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) aircraft.

Sub-subseries I consists of photographs of World War I memorabilia, aircraft components and instruments, and negatives of World War I aircraft and pilots.

Sub-subseries J houses photographs of stamps, displays, and receptions at the WPRL.

Sub-subseries K contains photographs and negatives of other aviation libraries, plus contact sheets of unidentified images.

The third series houses mugs, ornaments, and artifacts as well as a number of CD-ROMs containing digital photographs from various events, displays, and presentations.

The fourth series includes MiniDV tapes and DVD–ROMs. It is divided into two subseries: 1. History of Aviation Collection Advisory Council Meetings and 2. Eugene McDermott Library Presentations.

Subseries 1 consists of MiniDV tape recordings and DVD copies of the HAC Advisory Council Meetings from 2011-2016.

Subseries 2 houses MiniDV tapes and DVD-ROMs of events, lectures, product demonstrations, and departmental updates.

The fifth Series contains posters, photographs, prints, and plans too large to fit anywhere else in the collection.

Historical Sketch

According to to the Eugene McDermott Library's Vision Statement: "The University of Texas at Dallas Libraries pledge to promote a collaborative and congenial learning environment as active partners with the faculty and administration in realizing the University’s mission. Employing the latest technology, the Libraries will manage and maintain access to the greatest number of resources relevant to the University’s teaching and research mission regardless of format. Constant effort and innovation will make access as efficient as possible, and the staff will instruct patrons enabling them to evaluate and extract maximum value. The Libraries will preserve and manage important and unique materials for present and future scholarship. Recruiting an excellent staff, updating its expertise, and encouraging its participation in professional activities will ensure high quality service that will add value to the University’s assets. Finally, the Libraries will maintain the highest ethical standards as stated in the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics."

The current library building was constructed in the 1970s and named for one of the University's founders, Eugene McDermott. In addition to the main campus building, the library has satellite facilities located in the Naveen Jindal School of Management building as well as at The Callier Center for Communication Disorders in Dallas.

The Eugene McDermott Library is also home to the Special Collections and Archives Division comprised of the Belstering Botanical Book Collection, The History of Aviation Collection, The Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library (WPRL), and the University Archives. The History of Aviation portion of Special Collections and Archives will be moving to a new location across campus in winter of 2017.
