James H. Doolittle Papers

Abstract

James H. Doolittle is most famous for the planning and implementation of the Tokyo Raid in April 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. After World War II, he graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with a PhD. He was instrumental in founding the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders Association. The James H. Doolittle Papers reflect his activities after the Second World War.

Amelia Earhart Commemorative Stamp Campaign Collection

Abstract

Clara Studer launched a campaign for a commemorative stamp in honor of Amelia Earhart. By soliciting the help of other pioneer women pilots such as Fay Gillis Wells and Louise McPhetridge Thaden, Ms. Studer and friends contacted congressmen as well as senators. These women gradually gained the support of newspapers throughout the country. On July 24, 1964, in Atchinson, Kansas, the stamp was officially issued.

Abstract Bert "Fish" Hassell was a pioneer aviator and began his flying career in 1914. His idea for a shorter, more direct route from the United States to Europe through the Great Circle Route in the arctic led to his famous emergency landing on the Greenland ice cap in 1928. In 1954, he helped construct the Distant Early Warning System. In 1969, Hassell's plane was recovered from Greenland and airlifted back to Rockford, Illinois. James Harold "Stormy" Mangham was a pioneer aviator and barnstormer born in 1907. In 1932, he purchased land in North Richland Hills, Texas to serve as a home, ranch, and private airfield. In 1954, he opened his private airfield to public use as Mangham Airport, which closed in 1986. Mangham, in addition to being a pilot, was also involved in setting motorcycle speed records. He passed away in 1974.
