Frank N. Graves enlisted in the United States Army in 1939 and trained as a pilot, receiving his wings at Kelly Field, Texas, later the same year. Graves initially served in the First Photo Group, Charting, a component of the First Mapping Squadron. In late 1944, Graves was part of a B-29 squadron—he joined the East China wing of Major General Claire Lee Chennault’s 14th Air Force. After the creation of the United States Air Force in 1947, Graves continued his military service to retirement.
